The Old Salmon River Trail is located in Welches, Oregon. Take Highway 26 to Old Salmon River Road (just past the Welches shopping center) for a few miles until you see the marked trailhead on the right. There are 5 parking areas, each located about 1/3 mile apart.
This hike is very easy and perfect for all ages and hiking abilities. From the trailhead the trail immediately heads down to the river. The trail follows the river the whole time and there are a lot of short side trails to small beaches and rocky areas that are great for taking pictures, relaxing, or having lunch. There is one area with a few stairs but other then that, it’s pretty evenly graded. The trail is lined with ferns and a few sparse huckleberry bushes. The main attraction is the Salmon River and the giant old growth Cedar and Doug Fir.
Around the 1.5 mile mark the trail ends briefly and you have to walk along the road for a few feet. There are signs letting you know where to exit and reenter. Near the turnaround point you will pass by the Green Canyon Campground where there are bathrooms if needed. The end of this hike is at the Salmon River Trailhead. This is an out and back trail, so turn around and head back the way you came.
