Little Beacon Rock (Winter)

Directions: Take I-84 East to Cascade Locks and cross the Bridge Of The Gods ($2 toll). Go left onto Highway 14 and drive to Beacon Rock. Take the road right across from Beacon Rock and follow it up to the Hamilton Mountain Trailhead.

This is a revisit, to see our first post click here. This hike is a great addition to Pool Of The Winds since you start on the same trail.

From the parking area head up the fairly steep, wide trail. After about a half mile you will come to an opening and cross under power lines. You get a good view of Hamilton Mountain, Bonneville Dam, and the Gorge. There is a trail junction here that you need to take. Go left and follow the trail as it goes back to the power line tower and enters back into the woods.

The trail starts to head downhill slightly as you walk along a well maintained and quiet trail. When you come to the Hadley Trail junction go left and the trail soon opens up giving you a view of Little Beacon Rock. You’ll come into a rocky area and the trail turns to gravel. If you’re quiet you might get a glimpse of the Pika that live in the rocks. The trail ends at Little Beacon Rock and gives you a nice view of Beacon Rock in the distance.

When you are ready to head back follow the trail back to the Hadley Trail junction. Take a left and follow the Hadley Trail down to the paved road. Go left and pass by a couple campsites and go around the closed gate that takes you back to the trailhead and your car.

Overall: This isn’t the most exciting hike we’ve done, but it was a little better this time around. There was more moss and everything was quite green, making it more visually appealing. The view of Beacon Rock is really nice too.
